Attended the 31st Annual Conference of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS) held at Corvinus University of Budapest from July 8th to 12th. Kusakari gave presentations on “From Community Garden to Community Kitchen” and Sato gave presentations on ” Transdisciplinary co-creation of autonomous innovations toward sustainability transformation: Leverage point analyses of transformation
mechanisms through synergies. “. Able to gather information on the latest trends in sustainability science and progressed in building a network with researchers from around the world.

About the ISDRS – 31st Annual Conference of ISDRS, 8-12 July, 2025

A seminar was held at the Tokyo University of Agriculture to discuss the results of the short-term research program by Phillip Kapulula. On the same day, a seminar was held at the University of Tokyo’s Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute to discuss the results of the short-term research program by Oscar Mwenyedawo.

From August 16th to 24th, together with Rie Goto and Taiju Saito from the South Ehime Fisheries Research Center, visited Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, which has an excellent track record as a resident research institute. We had a discussion with President & CEO Dr. Michael Crosby and researchers from a variety of fields about the possibility of future collaboration in Sato-umi nature restoration and monitoring. We held a seminar to introduce the results of the project, which opened up the possibility of future multifaceted collaboration.

From July 17th to 31st, 2024, Tetsu Sato, Motoko Shimagami visited Indonesia. Yasuko Kusakari and John Matewere visited Indonesia as third country training programs.
Conducted field survey to Malasari Village, Jeneberang, and Polewali, and reported the project results to local innovators in each area. International Symposium on Transdisciplinary Research at Hasanuddin University was attended by more than 200 participants and included results presentations and dialogue. The exchange and mutual learning between Malawian and Indonesian innovators was a great success.

From February 6th to 13th, Tetsu Sato had a seminar presentation at the ISF Roundtable Seminar at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. Had an in-depth discussion with ISF researchers with a wealth of experience in the TD research on sustainable agriculture currently being conducted in Malawi, and looked into the possibility of future collaborative research.

“Collaborative research by graduate students through the Long-term Research Program on the IntNRMS project” was held at Tokyo University of Agriculture. Invitees from Malawi also participated, and research presentations were given by graduate students who came to Japan for short-term and long-term research programs. They discussed future research topics for each SATREPS project. There were 20 participants.

On November 23rd, 2023, an international symposium was held at Ehime University, inviting five guests, including Vice Chancellor Samson Sajidu of the University of Malawi. There were 40 participants.

On October 6th, 2023, Hopeson Kasiya held a seminar for international students at the University of Tokyo Graduate School (a hybrid of in-person and online) with 15 participants.

From July 8th to 16th, 2023, Tetsu Sato participated in the Transformations Conference 2023 held at the University of Technology Sydney in Sydney, Australia. Presented the results of Malawi SATREPS and had discussions with participants.

From November 19th to 24th, 2022, Tetsu Sato participated in the 4th World Small-scale Fisheries Congress (4WSFC) Africa held in Cape Town, South Africa, and made a presentation and commented as a discussant.
